Prince of Persia Movie for 2009

Concept art for the film.

Cast
Jake Gyllenhaal ...  Prince Dastan

Ben Kingsley ...  Nizam

Gemma Arterton ...  Tamina

Alfred Molina ...  Sheik Amar

The project, headed by a collaboration between Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and Walt Disney Pictures, has recently hired Michael Bay to direct the film, who has worked with Bruckheimer on such films as Armageddon, The Rock, and the Bad Boys series. It is reported that Bay will begin working on the film as soon as Transformers, his current summer blockbuster project, is completed.

Titled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the movie will be based on the 2003 game that brought the Prince of Persia series back from the dead. However, Jordan Mechner, the series' creator, has stated that the transformation from game to film will not be exact.

"Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story -- much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride," Mechner said in an interview.

Although it had been originally announced with a hopeful 2008 release date, Prince of Persia fans may have to wait a year longer. Bruckheimer has since announced that the project has been slated for a release of Summer 2009.

Who will play Prince Dastan?
a perfect choice. Jake Gyllenhaal he even looks like the prince ..

American actor Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast in the leading role in the motion picture adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, writes The Hollywood Reporter. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film, which is based on the best-selling Ubisoft game of the same title and slated for a summer 2009 opening, is set to begin shooting this July.

Gyllenhaal will wield the temporal powers of the sands of time as sixth century Persian Prince Dastan. Working together with the enigmatic Princess Tamina played by British actress Gemma Arterton, Dastan must prevent an ill-intentioned nobleman from seizing the sands of time.

Direct any and all future comments regarding the adaptation to Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner who helped pen the screenplay, joining writers Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, and Boaz Yakin. Mechner, who created the series way back in 1989, was involved intimately in the game's revival on which the film is based. He collaborated with Ubisoft in 2003 to release Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.

Final casting for the starring role comes after months of speculation. From 28 Days Later lead Cillian Murphy to elven heartthrob Orlando Bloom and even a few fresh faces, Gyllenhaal emerges as the actor with the honor of swathing himself in the Prince's robes. A costume change should come easily for the award-winning actor whose previous roles include gay cowboy Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain and an emotionally disturbed teen in Donnie Darko.
