Chapter 18

Mr. Villanueva? Sam was shocked to hear those words. Franz can’t possibly be Mr. Villanueva because his surname is Yu. But I can’t see Will around. Sam wanted to convince herself that she had heard it wrong. Although the thought keeps on bothering her, she decided to ignore it.

“I’d like you to meet my family. Just be yourself okay?” Franz held Sam’s hands tighter.

Franz escorted Sam into the function hall. They walked on the red carpet and as they pass by, several heads turned.

“What a perfect couple!”

“I soooo love her dress!”

Several guests were making positive comments that flattered Sam. Franz directed her into the table that Sam believed to be the Franz’s family.

“Mommy-La! I want you to meet my friend, Samantha.” Franz introduced Sam to his grandmother.

“Good evening po.” Sam smiled at her.

“You got a pretty dress, ija.” Mommy-La seemed to like Samantha.

“And this is my Mommy Carla,” Franz explained that Mommy Carla is his step-mom.

Franz’s mother died when he was 12 years old and two years later, his dad re-married his first wife whom he had a divorce with. Mommy Carla treats Franz as her own son although it was just this year that Franz moved into his dad’s house. When they came back to the Philippines, he stayed at his grandmother’s house even after his dad and his step-mom’s wedding.

Sam was introduced to several relatives and they were all pleased to see her. They like her very much. Franz led Sam into their designated table. She was with Franz’s family friends and cousins. Sam excused herself and went to the comfort room. She can’t believe that she was actually introduced to almost all of Franz’s relatives, - but Franz told her that it’s just half of the family.

The emcee announced that the debutante is about to make her elegant entrance so everyone was requested to go to their places immediately and welcome the princess of the night. Sam hurriedly went back to their table ---

“Oh, sorry…I was in a hurry and I wasn’t looking at the --- Will?” Sam was shocked to see Will at the party.

“Hi Sam. See yah around.” Will forced a smile and left.

“Will…how come…” Sam asked herself.

Sam wanted to believe she was dreaming. She wanted to think that what had happened was just a hallucination. She went back to their table. She was still preoccupied with the thought of Will.

“Franz…do you know ---“ Franz hadn’t noticed that Sam was asking him something due to the emcee’s sudden announcement.

“And now, let’s welcome our lovely princess for the night, Margarette Sophia Villanueva Tan!”

The program went on with the AV presentation and welcoming of guests.

“I'll be right back Sam. I need to make some adjustments with the program, Phia’s bestfriend isn’t still here.” Franz told Sam.

Sam went into the garden outside of the function hall. She still can’t believe that Will is in the same place as she is right now. Then she saw him. He was there, sitting on a bench talking to someone, talking to girl. The girl seemed to be crying; yet Will is hugging her. Something stroke Samantha’s heart. She felt something that she shouldn’t have felt. Jealousy. She wanted to be that girl he is hugging, and the memory in the Chem Lab flew back. His arms, the warm embrace…how she wanted to experience it again. Then the girl stood up. Will was about to follow her but the girl’s gesture indicates that he doesn’t have to.

Will was sitting alone there. His head buried in his hands. Sam mustered her courage and approached Will.

“Hey.” Sam sat beside him.

“Hi.” Will moved a few inches away.

~Awkward. Silence.

“Uhm…I was invited by ---“

“Yeah. I know. Are you having a great time?” Will wasn’t looking at Sam’s eyes. He gazed up the starry sky.

“I…I just wanted to know…how are you --- and Franz related?”

“I need to go back in…” Will stood up.

“No.” Sam caught Will’s wrist. “I need to know something.”

“Sam, your date’s probably looking for you…” Will held Sam’s hand and removed it from his wrist.

“Please…” Sam was quick enough to hug him. She hugged him tight and inclined her head onto his back. “Why…why do you treat me like this?”

“Sam, please. Let go of me.” Will doesn’t seem to be struggling. He wanted Sam to let go of him, yet he didn’t attempted remove her grip from his body.

“Why do you keep on pushing me away?” Tears started to ran down. Sam isn’t still letting go. “Can’t you see that I’m hurting?”

“Sam please forget about me. You don’t deserve someone like me.” Will took a deep breath.

“You just have to tell me you love me.” Sam was crying.

“You can’t force someone to love you.”

“Then tell me what's with you and Franz!”

--- “Participants of the 18 roses, be ready. Kindly proceed here near the stage.”

“I guess it’s my call. Sorry Sam.” A minute passed then Sam let go. Will went to the hall. Sam was left there. She wanted to go home. She just needs to tell Franz that she’ll go home alone.

Franz went back to their table a few minutes after he left Sam. Sam wasn’t there. He looked for her and saw her in the garden. He saw her back. It seemed that she’s hugging someone from behind. He wanted to come closer. He wanted to see whom she was hugging. He wanted to make sure that Sam isn’t crying. Yet…

--- “Participants of the 18 roses, be ready. Kindly proceed here near the stage.”

Franz immediately went near the stage. He decided to ask Sam right after his turn.

Sam went back to the hall after Will had left her. She needs to find Franz. But it seems that she has to wait for the 18 roses to finish since Franz is a participant.

“Next is Mr. Wilbert Emmanuel Ramos Villanueva.” Will went on stage to have a dance with the debutante. “Will describes Phia as a one of a kind girl, a very loving yet a scary one.”

Will looked handsome while doing the waltz with Phia. How Sam dreamt to be the girl he’s dancing with. If she can only take it to stay longer, she probably can have the chance to dance with him.

“Another cousin of our dear debutante is Mr. Franz Kristoff Yu Villanueva. ---“

Franz Kristoff Yu Villanueva???

Sam was so shocked. She left the hall...she left and went out to go home.

eto na ang mahabang update. i was supposed to post this yesterday but i decided to add a few scenes.. so here it is:

Chapter 19

Will saw Samantha walk towards the hall exit. The moment Franz’s name was called, he knew Sam will find out. He ran, he ran only to find out that Sam had already got a taxi. He was late…too late. He was sure Sam wouldn’t want a single word with him on Monday. Franz looked for Sam after his turn. Will noticed that Franz is looking anywhere around the hall.

“She left…”

“Who? Samantha? Why?” Franz can’t find the reason as to why would Sam have left the party.

“She found out that I’m related to you.”

“Does she know you? And…related, as to what? Half-brothers?

“I’m her classmate, and you know that I’m a Lion, and her kuya is the Captain. She’s annoyed with me.”

“For just that reason?”

“Let’s just say that we’re not in good terms. It’s just that I hated the way she talks to me.” Will lied. He knows for a fact that Sam’s reaction has something to do with their feelings.

“But…but why would she leave?”

“I’m sorry bro…maybe I annoyed her. Maybe I'll just apologize to her. Sorry bro.”

Franz tried to call Sam’s phone. But Sam wasn’t picking up.

“I know she’ll be home fine. I think it’s best not to bother her first. Besides, she might have her temper still up.”

“But…I just want to make sure.”

“Just leave it to me okay?”

Although Will never intended to interfere, he needs to fix everything. Franz must not know that there’s something between Sam and Will. Sam must not know what’s keeping Will away. All rests into Will’s powers.

“Sam! You’re early? And…where’s Franz?”

“Oh, He’s still at the party. I wanted to go home early…I’m not feeling well…so I decided to just get a cab.” Sam lied. She wanted to be alone, and the least thing she wanted in this world is her Kuya interrogating her.

“Are you sure…---“

“I’m fine kuya. I need to sleep.”

Drei didn’t ask Sam further. He allowed her to come up her room and change, to rest.

All messages in Sam’s inbox were from Franz. She didn’t want to open it. She doesn’t care what those messages say. What she wanted from Will was an explanation. Yet he didn’t even bother to call or text her, and it’s Franz who’s worrying about her. She wanted Will…Will.

MONDAY

“Sam…”

“So, you finally decided to talk to me.” Sam told Will while copying the lecture on the board.

“I’m sorry…you see…I wanted to explain everything.”

“About what? There’s nothing to explain. It’s very clear that you and your half-brother played with me.”

“Sam…please, not here.”

There was no professor. The class was dismissed early and most students were copying the lecture on the board while others where chatting.

“What’s not to discuss here? It’s not that confidential you know. Or you’re just ashamed that you have a half-brother?”

“Why is it a big deal to you? I’m not ashamed of Franz. And we never played with your feelings!”

“Oh you didn’t?” Sam had stopped copying, and was now facing Will. “So what would you like to call what you did to me? I like you Sam…then all of a sudden, ‘Oh I was just carried away’ tell me, what do you want to call that? A simple joke?”

“It wasn’t really like that Sam…Yes I have liked you before…but it’s just ---“

“Enough!” Sam stood up. “I don’t want to hear that anymore.”

“But…Sam, can’t we at least be friends?”

Sam thought for a moment. Even if Will doesn’t love her, she can make him fall for her over again. She can just pretend that everything’s fine. That she had recovered.

“Uhm…okay…”

Will was glad that Sam wanted him to be her friend. Sure it’ll be hard for him to pretend. But it’s the only way he can be close to her, close to the person he loves.

“So…do you want to go with me to the caf?”

They both went to the cafeteria. Sam looked for a place while Will was buying their food. Sam had already found one so she sent a message to Will that she was at the second floor.

Sam was waiting there for almost three minutes. This feels great, we’re friends. But it feels like we’re dating.

“Hey Sam!” Sam was surprised to see Franz holding up a tray with his food and the food that she had told Will to order for her.

“Oh, hi…where is…”

“Uhm, Will told me he’s going to have a practice. Good thing I bumped into him downstairs…and there’s no available seat anywhere…since you’re alone here, can I join you?”

“Su…sure.” Sam was still uneasy. She doesn’t know how to react now that she knows about Will and Franz.”

“So…I guess you already know…”

“Yeah.”

“Sorry about that Sam. I didn’t know that you’re my brother’s mortal enemy. I was so careless that I haven’t thought of what you might have felt that night.”

What did Will told Franz? He told him that we’re enemies? Not…not what I feel…? Sam kept her mood and acted as if what Franz had told is true. She just smiled at him.

“Hmm…hey, Sam…are we okay now?”

“Huh?”

“I mean…you’re not mad at me anymore?”

“Oh…no…” Sam smiled. How can she be angry? Will had explained everything. “Don’t worry…just forget about it okay?”

“Really? Thank you so much Sam!” Franz smiled at her…he smiled like he’ll never smile again.

Sam smiled back. Franz ate his pizza burger. Sam drank her iced tea and looked out of the window. The magnificent fountain was at view. There were several students sitting and lying on the grass…some were having their snacks as if they’re on a picnic. Then she saw a girl, probably waiting for someone. The girl resembles the same girl she saw at the party, the girl whom Will was talking to. Then she saw Will. He was walking towards her. No. Will was at the gym Franz told Sam that he’s having practices. It can’t possibly be him. BUT it was him. Sam looked away from the window. Franz was still eating his food. Obviously, he didn’t notice that Sam was looking at Will and the girl.

“That girl…” Sam whispered, then sighed.

“Who?” Franz had heard what Sam said.

“Oh, nothing…hehe”

“You love someone who loves another girl…”

“What are you talking about?” Sam faked a laugh. “I am not.”

“Hayyy…” Franz sighed. “It’s like loving from a distance right? All you can do is just look at the person from afar and sigh.”

“Hey Franz…I told you I’m not.”

“You can always tell me your problems Sam.” Franz smiled at her.

“I love him.” Tears started to fall from Sam’s eyes.

“And I love you.” Franz whispered. “Does he love you?”

“No. He told it straight to me.”

“I don’t know who that person is. But one thing I can say to you Sam is that, I will do my best for you to forget him.”

“I’m sorry Franz…” Sam wiped her tears. “I know I shouldn’t be telling this to you.”

“It’s okay Sam. I know you don’t see me as a lover. But I know time will come…”

“No Franz…it’s not that I don’t…I just…it’s…”

“Don’t worry Sam. You don’t have to explain.” Franz smiled. He stood up and sat beside Sam. “Whatever happens, I can always lend you my shoulder.”
